Influence of the electro-optical properties of an a-Si:H single layer on the performances of a pin solar cell

2012

We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Optical measurements allowed to extract the absorption spectra and the optical bandgap. Additionally, we report on the temperature dependen…

A model for multilayered beams undergoing end loads

2013

A formulation for layered beams undergoing end loads, namely axial, shear and bending actions, is developed and presented in this paper. A layer-wise kinematical model is first derived so that the point-wise balance relationships are fulfilled at the layer level. Successively, by enforcing the interface continuity conditions and taking the traction–free conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the laminate into account, the layer-wise kinematical quantities are written in terms of generalized kinematical variables representative of the beam displacements field. The beam problem is then formulated in terms of these generalized variables leading to a model that shows the positive characte…

A Theory of Laminated Beams Subjected to Axial, Bending and Shear Load

2013

A theory of laminated beams subjected to axial, bending and shear loads is presented in this paper. The kinematical model employed to describe the laminated beam displacement field is layer-wise in nature. Moreover it is such that the equilibrium equations and the continuity of the stress components at plies interfaces are satisfied. By using the whole set of interface continuity conditions in conjunction with the traction –free conditions on the beam top and bottom surfaces the layer-wise kinematical quantities are written in terms of the mechanical primary variables pertaining to one layer only, which are then expressed in terms of the laminated generalized displacements. The solution for…

Algorithmic method of design and analysis of fractional-slot windings of AC machines

1998

The paper presents a new algorithmic method of designing fractional-slot windings for AC machines of the double and single layer type. The method allows to design windings with a small number of slots per pole and phase, and then to analyse their MMF harmonic spectra in a simple systematic way and to optimise the construction. The presented method comprises not only 3-phase, but alsom-phase windings, which in the case of compact converter-motor units are quite applicable.

Multilayer Network Model of Movie Script

2018

Network models have been increasingly used in the past years to support summarization and analysis of narratives, such as famous TV series, books and news. Inspired by social network analysis, most of these models focus on the characters at play. The network model well captures all characters interactions, giving a broad picture of the narration’s content. A few works went beyond by introducing additional semantic elements, always captured in a single layer network. In contrast, we introduce in this work a multilayer network model to capture more elements of the narration of a movie from its script: people, locations, and other semantic elements. This model enables new measures and insights…

Vibro-acoustocal behavior of composite structures with damping elements

2013

This work is on the subject of modelization of structures treated with passive damping elements. A generic "equivalent single layer" plate model using transverse shear warping functions is presented. Several methods to obtain these functions are described, allowing the implementation of classical models and others issued from the litterature. Two new methods for obtaining these functions are also presented.Several discretization methods adapted to the generic plate model are studied. Navier's procedure allows the testing of the quality of each model associated with a set of transverse shear warping functions. Rayleigh-Ritz method allows the study of the vibrational behavior of a rectangular…

Ultrastructural patterns of human dentinal tubules, odontoblasts processes and nerve fibres.

2005

The structure of the dentin, consists of the following elements: the odontoblastic processes, dentinal tubules and their periodontoblastic spaces. The odontoblasts are aligned in a single layer in the periphery of the dental pulp and secrete the organic components of dentin. The vitality of dentin is mediated too by the nerve fibres. The ultrastructure of the trigeminal sensory nerves in dentin, especially in relation to odontoblasts remains to be clarified. We studied the third molars and young premolars. The specimens were fixed in glutaraldehyde immediately after extraction. Our investigations give evidence to prove that the distribution of the dentinary tubules is homogeneous, containin…

Fine Structure of the Tunic ofCiona intestinalisL. II. Tunic morphology, cell distribution and their functional importance

1981

Ciona intestinalis L. tunic architecture and cell distribution were investigated with the electron microscope. The observations showed that the ascidian covering is formed by a thin outer cuticle, a subcuticle of variable width and a large single layer of ground substance. “Large granule”, morula, phagocyte and granulocyte are the cellular types encountered; they appear mainly in highly vacuolated states and are distributed throughout the whole tunic. The “large granule” cells, however, are mainly seen in the cuticle layer and the morula cells appear mostly in the outer zone of the ground substance. The role of these cells in tunic construction, repair and regeneration as well as their scav…

Green light-emitting devices based on soluble oligo(phenylenevinylenes)

2005

In this work, we report our investigations on the film-forming properties as well as the optical and electroluminescent characterisations of a series of lateral-substituted soluble oligo(phenylenevinylenes) of various conjugation length. Preliminary investigations show that these materials are potential candidates for use in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Two types of OLEDs were fabricated: single layer (SL) and single heterostructure (SHS), with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as hole transporting layer. Our best results were obtained with single layer device emitting green light with a luminance of 0.18 cd m(-2) and 0.24 cd m(-2) at a driving voltage of 10 V. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.…

Deriving scaling laws in geodynamics using adjoint gradients

2018

Abstract Whereas significant progress has been made in modelling of lithospheric and crustal scale processes in recent years, it often remains a challenge to understand which of the many model parameters is of key importance for a particular simulation. Determining this is usually done by manually changing the model input parameters and performing new simulations. For a few cases, such as for folding or Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities, one can use thick-plate stability analysis to derive scaling laws to obtain such insights. Yet, for more general cases, it is not straightforward to do this (apart from running many simulations). Here, we discuss a numerically cheaper approach to compute scalin…
